The Numbers in Golf: The Lowest Number Wins the Game

The score dictates the winner in many other sports event but unlike most games, the highest score does not win it for a round of golf, instead the player with the lowest scorecard is considered the victor.

Each hole has a standard number of attempts or stroke and this is called a par. It is every golfer’s aim to hit a number below the par or equal it to make a good score. A bogey describes a number over par while a birdie is equivalent to one that is lower than par. Each shot above or below is further indicated by a different golf term.

Non-professional golfer’s can gauge their level of play by adapting a scoring index, which is called the golf handicap system. Professional players do not use this system and it is most advised for other golfers who want to monitor their level of progress in the game of golf.

What is the Golf Handicap System and what is its purpose?

The handicap system in golf was established around the 20th century as a means of measuring each golfer’s ability and improvement per round and at every course. Each stroke made on the green equals to a number, which is calculated at every last hole or at every hole. Generally, men golfer has a lower handicap index of 28 while the index for females is set at 36.

The Golf Handicap System works not only to measure skill but also to regulate players to play against each other within their own “handicap”. It generally sums up how much more or lesser strokes a golfer has to take to sink the ball in comparison compared to the opponent.

Is the handicap system regulated?

Yes, all non-professional golfer’s score are tallied and computed based on a system. The R&A based in Scotland is the main body that is responsible in overseeing the issuance of a golfer’s handicap index except in the United States. In the US, the USGA oversees the golf handicap system.

Each completed round of golf should be posted and inputted to computer software that automatically calculates the golfer’s handicap. A designated committee for each club can manually complete a golfer’s handicap index.

What affects the computation of a golfer’s handicap?

The USGA has a more stringent rule in determining a golfer’s handicap and is based on three variables:

1.The score incurred from the most recent golf game

The cumulative score from at least 5 games can be used to calculate the handicap score, but it is recommended to complete 20 rounds of golf then use the scores from those games to compute the handicap.

2.Course Rating

This is the number that tells the golfer how many strokes he or she can make in one course. This is a standard number, which will then be subtracted from the total score gained after the game.

3. Slope Rating

This is a ratio from 55 to 155 that determines the difficulty of a course for a golfer who has a mean score of 90 per round of golf or a bogey golfer. The average slope rating is 113.

The game of golf maybe the game of gentlemen but it can be as competitive as any other contact sport. The handicap system allows each golfer the chance to play within their level and more so, give more reasons to improve their play.

Understanding Golf Rules: No More Confusions!

One of the many reasons why beginners are quite apprehensive about playing the sport is because of the innumerable golf rules which tend to change or get updated every now and then. If you want to make sure that you are saved from all the confusing and intimidating demands of golfing, it is imperative you start with the basic understanding of fundamental rules and regulations in the world of golf.

Here are some of the basic rules which all golf beginners and novices must learn to have a grip of what this sport is all about. Take note that there are up to 100 pages in a booklet officially released by the USGA and the R&A. Moreover, the summary of the rules provided here at a glance are never utilized to settle any agreements or disputes. The rule overviews provided are likewise based on the ones offered by the Professional Golfers Association of America or PGA.

Rule #1 – The Game

It all depends on the course but the holes must be played in order. This means you must play from hole one to nine or from hole 1 to 18. This rule is to be followed unless stated otherwise by the committee in charge.

All players are required to play by the rules. No one is allowed to make changes or ignore the rules and guidelines of the game.

Rule #2 – The Match Play

During match play, different holes mean separate contest. Hence, if the player wins one hole, then it is considered he is “one up” but if he loses the second hole, he is “one down.” Players who halved the holes get “all-squared.”

Player is announced as the official winner when he has more holes up compared to the remaining holes to be played. For instance, players who have won three up and the holes left to play are only two, then he won the game with the score “three and two.” The person you are playing against is called your opponent.

Rule #3 – The Stroke Play

The player who garnered the lowest total scores for each round or rounds, is announced the winner during stroke plays. Players are required to play the ball and into the hole before they could start the next hole. In stroke play, you consider the person you are playing with as your “fellow-competitor.” Stroke play and match play is not possible at the same play day.

Rule #4 – The Ball and Clubs

Players are allowed to carry no more than 14 golf clubs during the game. Unless, there is a rule that states otherwise, players are not allowed to change golf balls especially when playing a hole. There are exceptions however such as when the player’s ball goes out of shape or the ball gets damaged. Nevertheless, the player who wants to change his ball must first consult his fellow competitor or opponent.

These are just few of the fundamental rules and regulations all beginners and newbie golfers are required to learn and understand by heart.

Golf Strategy: Play like the Pros

Golf strategy especially when navigating the golf course is one of the sure-fire secrets of the pros. For newbie and beginners, there are more things to learn than just the fundamental strokes, drives and moves. You must also learn the rules of the sport which could take a considerable deal of your time. Through learning important strategies in golf, you could step up in your game and successfully go around the course. You could also avoid the pitfalls of the game including trees, water hazards, sand traps and the roughs along the fairway.

Strategy #1 – Give It One Shot at a Time

It only takes one shot! Just a single shot at a time is all you need but you must also learn how to apply this to your game and overall course management. Manage the approach, lay-up, drive and the putt and take all these one at a time. If there is a shot you are not confident about, never use it in the course.

Strategy #2 – Be Confident, Not Egoistic

One very important pointer all golfers must learn is that you must never let your ego get the best of you and swing the golf club. This is not just a simple tip – it is the best one ever, so use it! Be confident because if you are, you know exactly what your ball flight is. Stay on the fairway and make sure you are aimed at improving your score. Take note that it is more important to think of not losing the golf ball you currently play than worrying how far it may go.

Strategy #3 – Have Productive Golf Practice

So that you do not wonder aimlessly and commit one mistake to another, make sure you have comprehensive understanding of golf basics. Accept and work on simple golfing techniques to use in your game. This way, you could enjoy the game more, save more on your golf balls and as the perennially used adage goes, practice makes perfect!

Strategy #4 – Never Ever Play from Memory

For starters, you must learn how to keep records and monitor your progress. For instance, keep documentation! Whether you are in the sand trap, on the fairway or in the rough, it is best you document everything. The rule is simple and plain – stop playing from memory!

Strategy #5 – Have a Pre-Shot Routine

Amateur golfers, even professional ones, commit the mistake of not having a pre-shot routine. How do you do this? Before swinging the golf club, ask yourself this question, “where would be the perfect and most ideal place for me to put the golf ball based on my skills?” Personalize your routine, select your target, choose the club and swing easy. Make sure you practice your pre-shot routine because the key is in the details of the process.

Knowing and perfecting the different golf strategies would certainly step up your game and deliver more success rates than usual. If you are 100% sure you want to be known in this realm, make sure you take the techniques by heart.

Laws of the Game

Soccer or football is played by rules and regulations just like any other game or sport. There are two opposing teams with eleven members each strategically positioned to score a goal while constantly avoiding physical contact with other players. Except for the goalkeeper, each player has no actual position but only specialized roles: strikers, defenders and midfielders.

Generally, a soccer game begins with a kick-off in the middle of the field with only the player kicking for the kick-off inside while all others have to be outside of the central circle and positioned on the side the team is defending. A game continues after the kick-off unless the ball has gone out of the field or if a penalty is called and a referee halts the game.

How to re-start the game:

1. Throw-in: When a team loses the ball and it goes out of bounds, the possession is awarded to the opposing team and the game is re-started from the point where the ball went off the field.

The throw-in must be made with both hands and the ball must be thrown from over the head. A player designated for the throw-in must have both feet touching the ground when doing so.

2. Corner kick: When the defense allows the ball to cross the goal line without actually scoring a goal, the opposing team is awarded a free kick.

3. Goal Kick: If the goalkeeper is able to stop and save the ball before crossing the goal line, the goalkeeper is given the chance to kick the ball from his position.

4. Penalty Kick: A fouled team is given the chance to kick the ball for penalty.

How to substitute a player:

Substitutions in international soccer is generally reserved during the last minutes of the game. This is so because once a manager decides to substitute a player, that player will no longer return to the field. Substitutes fill in only due to injury and less so to rest strong players like in other sports events.

Substitutes can only enter the pitch after the referee has given a sign and only after the player being replaced has left the field. Non-abidance to the rule can result to a yellow card from the referee.

What does offside mean?

The offside rule is one of the most confusing rules to the game of soccer, but in all honesty, its purpose is to keep the game more challenging than it already is.

Being offside is a variety of three things: the player is on the opposing team’s field, the player is positioned in front of the ball and that there are less than two opposing players between the player and the ball.

Simply, a striker is called offside when he is actually nearer to the goal line than the ball and the other team’s defender besides the goalkeeper. Being offside is called after the ball has been passed to the striker and not when the striker has kicked the ball. That is why most often, the “goal” has already been made before a referee calls it offside.

The Kings of the World

Soccer or football is arguably one of the most famous sports in the world today. It is not entirely because of the magnificent display of athleticism but it is more of a result of its superstars.

Superstars become one because of many reasons and soccer, though, one of the most revered athletic events has also made it’s share of good and bad media.

Nonetheless, the famous men of the game have not only transcended distances but also broken down age differences and has amassed one of the great followings in the world of sports.

Whether it is for skill, looks, money or state of mind, some soccer players have changed the way soccer is played and viewed.

1. Iker Casillas

One of the most understated soccer team member is this Spanish goalkeeper. He may be currently famous for wiping his booger on a little boy but on the field, he is Real Madrid’s go-to guy. For so many occasions, his team has relied on his quick ability to read plays and stop balls in motion.

One of the assets of “Saint Iker” is his knack for taking charge in the backfield and making all the other players accountable for their errors. No wonder he remains his teams’ best goalkeeper and the captain of Spain’s world cup hopes as well.

2. Lionel Messi

One of the many great soccer produce of Argentina, Messi continues to keep soccer hooligans on their toes as to how he will get the ball inside the net. His power to sink five goals in one game has definitely changed every soccer players’ mentality at how to play a ball at any time of the game.

Effortless is how he projects every kick as each goal takes him closer to becoming a soccer legend at a young age of 24. Despite his own success, the Barcelona player remains loyal and vowed to play for his team until he can play soccer. He is not just a superstar because of his popularity but more so because of his superb soccer skills.

3. David Beckham

Undeniably, Becks has broken more barriers for the world of soccer than any other player has done. With his great work ethic and cutesy face, more people in the world began to take notice and took interest in the sport. The marketing strategy of David Beckham has worked best for both industries – soccer and fashion.

Although, his strategizing ability midfield has become indispensable for Europe, he has now captivated more North American citizens to enjoy the game of football and as old as he is, his enigma continues to captivate more fans to the game of soccer.

4. Cristiano Ronaldo

One of most “valuable” player in the soccer industry, Cristiano Ronaldo has also come out as one of the games most arrogant player and deserves to be a soccer superstar for being both. His constant hat tricks have inevitably etched Portugal and his name in many soccer books but his cockiness has also placed him in the spotlight.

On and off pitch, CR7’s “I’m great, me!” attitude has gained him more money and less Spanish fans and friends. But still, he commands more online followers than many of his colleagues, truly making him a superstar.
